Dessert: Harmony in Red (The Red Room), 1908, is considered by some art historians to be Matisse’s masterpiece. Matisse was strongly influenced by the Post-Impressionists, Van Gogh, Gauguin and Paul Cezanne. Van Gogh was an avid admirer of Japanese art and motifs. He developed his style with flat, brilliant and often unnatural areas of colour and invariably outlined his forms in a manner similar to Van Gogh. Like Impressionist Claude Monet, this Fauvist painting has no central point. The painting was originally commissioned as ‘Harmony in Blue’, but Matisse was dissatisfied with the result, so he repainted it with his preference for red.
