All Golden Ratio Color numbers go from 000 (black) to 999 (white). This makes more sense than a group of mysterious color names which isn’t much help
- 911 = Red
is easier to remember than
- #ff0e0e (hex) = Red
- 218,0,0 (RGB) = Red
and easier to implement than
- furious red
- lipstick red
When it comes to choosing names for for colors, there are two “personas” to support. One is programmers and the other is designers. Each discipline has its own challenges, but must work together to solve problems systematically.
Designers
Semantic naming is the best choice for designers. It limits the number of colors to a reasonable amount. Not too many or too few. It makes it easy to support multiple and different color themes.
Engineers
Contextual naming is best for Engineers, it allows to support light and dark modes and gives granular management of backgrounds, borders and text colors.
